Canadian Blood Services is responsible for finding and matching volunteer donors to patients who need stem cell transplants. Fewer than 25% of patients who need stem cell transplants find a compatible donor within their own family. The rest rely on those who have volunteered to donate stem cells to anyone in need. The Canadian Blood Services National Public Cord Blood Bank will collect, process, test and store cord blood units donated which will be available for transplant to any Canadian patient in Canada, as well as patients in need around the world. Cord blood stem cell transplants are used for treating over 50 blood related diseases and disorders.
